Hormones

Current therapy directed at restoring proper hormonal balance has made tremendous strides from the old days of prescribing drugs like "Premarin & Provera," which were responsible for excess risk of cancer and heart disease. Today’s modern bio-identical therapies use real hormones, not drugs, and have substantial medical literature documenting their safety and benefit.

Cherise MSN FNP-BC has trained within the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine Fellowship, on the proper use and management of hormonal therapies for the advancement of women’s health. The application of a balanced approach to replacement hormones reduces the risk for heart disease and improves bone health thus reducing risk for osteoporosis. The brain has more hormone receptors than the uterus does and, as expected, replacement of natural hormones helps support good cognition, memory, mood stabilization, and improved sleep patterns, as well as reduction or elimination of headaches, including migraines. All of this can occur with no increase in risk for cancer.

A study by Dr. Fournier followed 80,000 women who either received a balanced bio-identical hormone replacement protocol using estrogen and progesterone or no therapy of any kind and there was no difference in breast cancer occurrence between these two groups. Breast cancer is a complex topic and one I engage in with great passion, however the simple truth is: it is inaccurate to state that breast cancer is the result of estrogen. If this were true then every 25 year old woman would live in fear of breast cancer. The 25 year old woman has a mountain of estrogen compared to 52 year old women who has practically none, yet it is the 52 year old that has all the risk for breast cancer. How do you explain that? The explanation is simple but it highlights the misinformation that surrounds us. There are simple answers.

I employ a comprehensive approach to hormones and monitor metabolites (breakdown products) of hormones as well as the other factors that influence hormone function such as thyroid and adrenal cortisol patterns. I monitor overall risk factors and modulate therapy to reduce risk while increasing benefits such as improved sex drive, energy levels, and overall sense of well-being.

I take equal passion and commitment to the restoration of hormones in men. Simply applying some testosterone cream does not begin to address the depth of care needed to ensure good long-term health in the male physiology. Modern approaches reported in the current medical literature contain significant inaccuracies. For example, there is a general thought that testosterone only absorbs at a 10% rate and this has been shown to be completely inaccurate. In fact, there is not a single study on the planet to show that this idea is true-- yet it has been such a long standing myth that most practitioners subscribe to. This leads many patients to be given excessively high doses of topical testosterone leading to side effects and increased risk for prostate problems.
